Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Study (Adage) - n.d. - T-Shirt

A pencil study of slender church towers rising above a misty waterfront, with a small rowing boat and a sailing vessel set on the water beside them.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is drawn in graphite on pale cream paper, and the cream dominates the composition. Three tall towers stand at the left and centre, one crowned with a bulbous onion dome and a small cross, another with a lantern and spire. A tall spired tower rises among a softly shaded cluster of roofs, and a smaller pointed tower sits at the right edge of the town. Above them, a low open boat with a mast floats against the sky, while a sailing vessel with furled sails rests on calm water at the right. A short pencil inscription appears at the lower left.

The towers are built from crisp, vertical strokes, while the town behind them dissolves into faint, feathered shading. The eye moves from sharp outlines in the foreground to a hazy distance, and the spacing between the static masonry and the moving boats gives the sheet its balance.

Meaning & Symbolism

The study pairs architecture with shipping, the two subjects of a harbour town seen from the edge of the sea. Church towers mark the civic and spiritual life of the settlement, while the boats point to the trade and travel that brought it to the water. Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, an American artist born in Manlius, New York, recorded motifs like these separately in sketches such as this one before assembling them into larger finished views. The drawing reflects his lasting interest in architectural and maritime subjects, and it dates from the 19th century.

Crafted for the Wearer

A tee carries this drawing across the chest, where the eye can settle on the towers and boats at close range, much as a viewer leans in to follow the pencil lines. The fine silhouettes and quiet spacing read clearly at a glance, and the hazy shading of the distant town gives the wearer a calm, atmospheric piece that stays in view as you move.
