Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, born Manlius - Theatre at Azani - unknown - T-Shirt

This pencil study shows a recumbent lion, head raised and mouth open, resting beneath a carved architectural block in an ancient theatre setting.

Visual Elements & Composition

The lion fills the lower half of the sheet, stretched low with one forepaw extended forward. Shading softens the mane and shoulder, while the body is drawn mainly in outline. Above it sits a carved block with a pair of spiral volutes, and scrolled acanthus foliage spreads across the upper right corner. The cream parchment ground dominates, with graphite grey strokes doing the work. The inscription, written vertically beside the block, reads Theatre Azani.

Meaning & Symbolism

Lions carved in relief and in the round were a common feature of ancient theatres and public monuments. They guarded thresholds, supported seats and stood for civic strength. Here the animal sits beneath a scroll ornament, the kind of decorative sculpture that enriched such buildings. Miner Kilbourne Kellogg, a nineteenth-century American artist born in Manlius, New York, made studies like this one on his travels, recording architectural sculpture so its forms could be referenced later. The original drawing is held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

The lion faces outward across the chest, so the wearer carries the animal at eye level and in full view. The scroll and foliage frame the upper body, and the inscription runs down the design the way it does on the original sheet. Each time you move, the sketch shifts with you, keeping the careful, watchful pose of the carving in view.
