Needham, D. - The Good Tree or Hieroglyphics of a Christian Design

This is an 1846 religious allegory in which a single tree stands for the soul rooted in faith, its branches arranged as a map of Christian virtue.

Visual Elements & Composition

The print is built on a hierarchical, symbolic layout rather than a scene. A central tree dominates the composition, and its branches and fruit are organized into ordered tiers so the eye reads the image from top to bottom as a structured chart. Every element is labelled or positioned to carry a specific meaning, which gives the piece the orderly, schematic feel of a lithographed broadside.

Meaning & Symbolism

The "hieroglyphical" conceit turns theology into a readable picture. The tree is the believer's soul, the branches are the virtues, and the fruit of the spirit grows from them. The arrangement sorts the duties, rewards and trials of the Christian life into a road map for piety. E.B. and E.C. Kellogg, prominent 19th-century lithographers working in Hartford, Connecticut, produced the print in the mid-century period when affordable religious imagery was widely used for moral instruction and private meditation in American homes.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A tee carries the chart across the chest, where it is seen whole at a glance, the way the original broadside was meant to be read. The tree's central trunk sits along the wearer's centreline, so the branching structure stays balanced as you move. Printed on a shirt, the allegory becomes something you can wear through the day as a reminder of the virtues it maps.
