Newton A. Wells, born Lisbon, NY - A Man - 1917 - T-Shirt

This is a portrait of a single named man, Newton A. Wells, set against the date 1917 and the town of his birth, Lisbon, New York.

Visual Elements & Composition

The composition is built around one figure. Nothing competes with the face and bearing of the subject, so the eye settles on him first and the lettering second. The etched linework gives the image its texture and a measured, even tone. The text carries much of the structure: the name, birthplace and year sit within the artwork as a formal inscription, the way a portrait's caption would be read beside a frame.

Meaning & Symbolism

The piece works as a personal record. Its title fixes the subject in biography, place and time, and it treats him as an individual rather than a symbol or allegorical type. Portraits of named people from the 1910s often served to mark personal legacy, civic identity and family remembrance, and this one follows that tradition. The dignified mood reflects the era's practice of honouring a subject's background and standing. Lisbon, New York, anchors the portrait in North American local history, and 1917 places it in the years of the First World War, when individual lives were routinely recorded at the moment they were lived.

Wearing the Portrait

A tee is worn close to the body, so this portrait sits at the wearer's chest and reads at conversation distance rather than across a room. The name and dates are small enough to be read by someone standing beside you, which suits a record meant to be looked at closely. Wearing it keeps a historical likeness in ordinary daily view.
