Open University Coat of Arms T-Shirt: Design Overview
This t-shirt showcases the official Coat of Arms of The Open University (OU), a heraldic emblem rich in symbolism and history.
The Shield (Escutcheon)
The central element of the design is the shield. It's Azure (blue) and prominently features an open book, depicted in its natural colors (proper), bound in Gules (red), and emitting rays of light in Or (gold), signifying enlightenment and the dissemination of knowledge. At the top of the shield is a Chief Or (gold), bearing two laurel wreaths, also in their natural colors (fructed proper), which represent achievement and honor, and are a symbol of academic success.
The Crest
Above the shield, the crest is displayed, sitting atop a Wreath Or and Azure. It features an Azure (blue) round-based escutcheon, pierced in the canton, positioned between two laurel branches of Or (gold), with leaves fimbriated Gules (red). The laurels again highlight academic achievement, while the pierced escutcheon adds a unique symbolic element of intellectual exploration.
The Supporters
On either side, the shield is supported by a lion rampant Or (gold). These lions hold saplings, which symbolizes growth and the nurturing of new knowledge. The lion, a symbol of strength and courage, embodies the spirit of the university.
The Motto
The design as a whole embodies the university's ethos, which is summed up in the motto "Learn and Live."
Overall Representation
This artwork is a visual embodiment of The Open University's commitment to accessibility, learning, and personal growth. The imagery reflects the University's dedication to knowledge, achievement, and the continuous pursuit of intellectual advancement.
