Realart Pictures Inc., American, - Lobby card for Imitation of Life - 1949 v1 - T-Shirt Design

This is a 1949 lobby card promoting the Realart reissue of the Hollywood drama Imitation of Life, built to draw audiences into cinemas.

Visual Elements & Composition

The card is an ink-on-paper promotional piece, and its layout follows the conventions of mid-century film advertising. It showcases scenes and stars tied to the story, so the film's leading figures and key moments carry the composition. Its purpose is to be read at a glance from across a theatre lobby, which is why the arrangement favours a clear focal image over fine print.

Meaning & Symbolism

The film, drawn from 1934 source material, examines race, identity, and class in American society through the relationship between two mothers and daughters. Released again in 1949, it reached post-war audiences just as those pressures on women navigating racial lines remained central to public conversation. Realart Pictures specialised in reissuing older studio films, and this card documents how the industry kept prestige dramas in circulation. It is now held in the National Museum of African American History and Culture collection, where it stands as evidence of how Hollywood marketed a story about race to American cinemagoers.

On the Tee

A lobby card was designed to be seen from a short distance, held up in a foyer and read quickly. On a tee, the artwork sits across the chest and is seen whenever the wearer is in view, so the card's bold central image stays legible at a natural conversation distance. The printed sheet becomes a piece of cinema history you can carry into everyday wear.
