Rembrandt Peale, born PA 1778-died - Contemplation - ca. 1850s - T-Shirt

A young woman rests her cheek on one raised hand, her eyes lowered, lost in private thought in this graphite study from the 1850s.

Visual Elements & Composition

The figure fills the sheet as a head-and-shoulders vignette, turned in profile and three-quarter view. Long, wavy hair falls in loose locks around her face and over one shoulder, built from dense, rhythmic grey lines that give the piece its movement. Her face is modelled with much softer, delicate shading, so the eye settles on the head and hand. A soft garment slips from one shoulder and folds across the bust. The title Contemplation is inscribed in script beneath the figure, with the initials R.P. at the right. Warm cream paper dominates the composition, with the graphite tones kept quiet and open around the figure.

Meaning & Symbolism

The pose is the subject. A head resting on the hand and eyes turned downward show a figure absorbed in inward reflection rather than engaging the viewer. Images like this were widely made in the nineteenth century, when a meditative young woman carried sentiment, melancholy and moral feeling. The inscription fixes the subject, and the unhurried handling keeps the emphasis on mood rather than story. The drawing is by Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860), an American painter and draughtsman and son of Charles Willson Peale, who was a leading portraitist of the early nineteenth century. He is best known for portraits of public figures, and this sheet shows the same care for modelling and expression in a figure study.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A tee carries this drawing across the chest, where its quiet cream ground and fine grey linework read at a glance and close up. The figure's downcast gaze and hand-to-cheek pose sit naturally on a shirt worn close to the body, so the reflective mood stays with the person wearing it.
