Samuel Johnson Woolf, 12 Feb 1880 - 3 - Cyrus Stephen Eaton - 1930 - T-Shirt

This is a head-and-shoulders charcoal and chalk portrait of Cyrus Stephen Eaton, drawn by Samuel Johnson Woolf in 1930 and built around a composed, direct gaze.

Visual Elements & Composition

Tan paper fills most of the sheet and sets the warm base for the drawing. Black charcoal carries the darkest passages: a dark suit jacket across the lower edge, a dark tie, and broad vertical strokes down the left side that form a shadowed field behind the head. White chalk picks out the crisp collar and lights the brow and cheekbones. The sitter's face is modelled in fine, blended tones, with shadow gathered under the nose and along the jaw. The artist's signature sits at the lower left, and the one piece of visible text is that scrawl, rendered as an illegible mark.

Meaning & Symbolism

The portrait records a man of business. Eaton was an American industrialist and financier based in Cleveland, active in commerce and public life in that region in the early twentieth century. The level eyes, closed mouth and sober dress suit project the seriousness of that working world, while the restrained tonal range keeps the attention on character rather than ornament. Woolf was known for charcoal and chalk portraits of prominent figures in the first half of the twentieth century, and this study shows his disciplined use of firm tonal contrast.

Where the Portrait Meets the Wearer

A head-and-shoulders portrait is built for the upper body, so the drawing sits naturally across the chest. The sitter's shoulders and white collar line up with the wearer's own shoulders, and the face falls at the centre of the chest where it reads clearly at conversation distance. The dark suit and tie anchor the lower half of the design, while the pale collar draws the eye up to the face.
