Samuel Johnson Woolf, 12 Feb 1880 - 3 - Frank Knox - c. 1935 - T-Shirt

A charcoal and white-chalk portrait of newspaper publisher and future Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox, drawn with a composed, watchful gaze against a warm buff ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is a three-quarter portrait of a heavyset man in a dark jacket, white collar and dark tie. Tan paper fills most of the frame, with a dense mass of charcoal behind the head that pushes the figure forward. Soft grey tone builds the high forehead and smoothly brushed hair, while white chalk lifts the brow, nose and collar. Pince-nez sit on his face, and a signature appears at lower left.

Meaning & Symbolism

Knox built his career in print, most notably as publisher of the Chicago Daily News. He ran as the Republican vice-presidential candidate in 1936, and in 1940 he was appointed United States Secretary of the Navy, serving through the Second World War as the fleet expanded rapidly. The steady, guarded expression fits a man whose public life moved between the press and the highest levels of government. The drawing was made by Samuel Johnson Woolf (1880–1948), an American portraitist known for charcoal and crayon studies of public figures, many made from life sittings. His method here is clear: a face built from soft tone, controlled edges and touches of white chalk, set in a bold dark ground.

Built for Close Viewing

A portrait drawing like this rewards a close look, and a tee gives it that intimacy. The face sits at chest level, so the viewer meets Knox's eyes the way a sitter would have met the artist's. The charcoal ground frames the figure the same way Woolf's sheet does, letting the pale chalk highlights on the brow and collar catch the eye first.
