Samuel Johnson Woolf, 12 Feb 1880 - 3 - Irving Berlin - 1944 - T-Shirt

A charcoal and white chalk portrait of Irving Berlin, turned three-quarters toward the viewer, drawn in 1944 by Samuel Johnson Woolf.

Visual Elements & Composition

Tan paper fills most of the vertical frame, and charcoal brown carries the darkest tones: the combed-back hair, the dark tie and the shadows around the eyes, nose and mouth. White chalk highlights along the brow and cheek bring the planes of the face forward. The head and shoulders dominate the composition, and the background is left plain, so nothing competes with the face. The sitter's name is written in script at the lower centre.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sitter was the Russian-born American songwriter whose work defined much of twentieth-century popular song, including "God Bless America" and "White Christmas." The calm, reserved expression and unforced pose present a private man set apart from the entertainment he supplied, and the restrained treatment keeps attention on character rather than performance. Woolf, an American portraitist born in 1880, built his likenesses of prominent public figures through tonal modelling, and this 1944 drawing shows that method at its clearest. The original is held in the National Portrait Gallery collection.

Framed for the Front of a Tee

A head-and-shoulders portrait suits the chest of a shirt. The face sits at eye level when the tee is worn, and the plain background lets the tan paper tone frame the figure without extra detail. The light collar and dark tie in the drawing give the design a clean, tailored line that reads well across a simple shirt, and the restrained tonal range means the portrait keeps its character whether seen up close or across a room.
