Solon H. Borglum, born Ogden, UT - Indian Village - n.d. - T-Shirt

This pencil sketch shows a camp of conical tipis spread across an open plain, with horses gathered near the dwellings and a tall pole rising at the centre.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built from soft graphite on aged cream paper, with the tones kept quiet and mostly grey. The nearest tipi sits at the left in three-quarter view, its poles converging to a point and a dark oval smoke flap near the base. Smaller, lighter tents recede toward the right edge, so the eye travels across the sheet from one dwelling to the next. Horses stand at the right, lowering their heads toward the tents. A band of horizontal shading beneath the forms anchors the whole scene to the ground.

Meaning & Symbolism

The tipi and the horse were central to the material life of the Plains peoples, and this sketch records an encampment with its animals at a settled moment of daily activity. The open spacing of the tents presents the camp as a whole, laid out across the land. Solon Hannibal Borglum (1868 to 1922), born in Ogden, Utah, trained in Paris under the animalier Emmanuel Frémiet and became best known for his sculpture of horses. Drawings like this one, which place horses within their working surroundings, reflect the attention that shaped his sculpture. The sheet comes from the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection.

Wearing the Study of a Camp

A tee carries this landscape across the chest, where the open composition can breathe on its own. The tipis and horses read clearly at a glance and reward a closer look at the pencil lines. Wherever you wear it, the drawing keeps its quiet, spacious character.
