Solon H. Borglum, born Ogden, UT - Lion - n.d. - T-Shirt

This is a pencil study of a walking lion in profile, drawn as a working sketch by sculptor Solon Borglum and annotated with blue measurement marks.

Visual Elements & Composition

The lion moves to the right across a field of aged cream, rendered in graphite pencil grey. Loose, feathered strokes build the mane around the head and shoulders, while shading gives the rounded muscle of the shoulder and haunch its weight. The forelegs are planted firmly, and the tail hangs at the left edge, balancing the figure across the sheet.

Ink blue annotations cross the drawing in small circles and arrows at the joints. A vertical measuring line runs against the body beside the handwritten note "3 heads long", and faint sketched lines at the feet suggest the ground beneath.

Meaning & Symbolism

The drawing is a study in structure and motion rather than a finished scene. Borglum observed the animal in movement, then tested its length and limb placement against a unit of proportion. Those blue marks record the method behind his work: measured looking that came before any larger form was built. Solon Borglum (1868-1922) was an American sculptor and painter best known for his animal sculptures, and this sheet shows the careful anatomical analysis that shaped them.

On the T-Shirt

A tee carries a drawing across the chest, so the sheet's measured lines and open composition read at a glance and up close alike. The lion's profile faces forward on the front, and the blue proportion notes give the print its detail as the wearer moves.
