Sydney - COA (Australia) Hoodie: Design Overview
A Symbol of Sydney
This hoodie showcases the City of Sydney's Coat of Arms, a powerful emblem reflecting the city's rich history, diverse heritage, and evolving identity.
The Central Shield
At the heart of the design is the shield, featuring a mural crown and an anchor. The crown signifies the city's municipal authority, while the anchor represents Sydney's deep-rooted connection to its harbor and maritime past.
The top of the shield is divided into thirds, incorporating simplified emblems that pay homage to the city's origins, including its British founding and its rise as a major port city.
Above the Shield
Above the shield, a six-pointed star, drawn from European heraldic tradition, adds a touch of historical significance.
Supporters: A New Vision
The modern design of the Coat of Arms, adopted in 1996, replaces the historical human figures with symbolic representations of cultural harmony. A serpent, inspired by the Rainbow Serpent from Indigenous Australian tradition and marked with patterns from the original inhabitants of Sydney (the Eora people), symbolizes the city’s indigenous heritage.
The serpent entwines with a coiled rope, reinforcing the maritime theme. This pairing represents the coming together of different origins in the city, the acknowledgement of indigenous heritage, and celebrating unity.
