Half Dome was one of the most striking landmarks Americans encountered in the western territories, and Moran's images presented it as monumental and sublime. Moran, a key figure of the Hudson River School and the Rocky Mountain school, travelled with geographic survey expeditions, and his luminous views helped build public support for protecting these lands and for establishing the National Park system.
