Thomas Moran, American, b. Britain, - Toltec Gorge, Colorado - ca. 1881 v5 - T-Shirt

This study by Thomas Moran turns a Colorado canyon into a sheer, layered drop of stone and shadow.

Visual Elements & Composition

Moran worked in graphite on buff paper, then built the forms with brush washes of brown and blue ink. White gouache picks out the lit edges of the rock, so the cliffs read as light striking hard planes. The gorge pulls the eye downward into its deepest recesses, and the contrast between pale highlight and dark recess carries the composition.

Meaning & Symbolism

Moran made this drawing around 1881, when the American West was being surveyed, mapped and settled by rail. Canyon walls like these were read in the nineteenth century as a natural cathedral: vast, imposing, and demanding reverence rather than conquest. Moran, a British-born painter, became one of the leading landscape artists of the American West and a key figure in the Hudson River School and Rocky Mountain School traditions. This drawing is held in the Smithsonian's Cooper Hewitt collection.

Wearing the Gorge

A tee carries this drawing across the chest, where it is seen up close as well as from a few steps away. The vertical sweep of cliff and gorge suits a wearer standing in the open, with the canyon rising above the body. The brown and blue washes give the print its tonal depth, so the image reads as a drawing rather than a flat graphic.
