Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built from restraint. Most of the sheet stays empty, and the figure occupies the centre in one continuous outline. Short dark strokes mark the stripes along the shoulder, flank and haunch, while one forepaw lifts above the back and the long tail curls upward toward the right edge. The head sits low and is partly hidden by the forelimbs, with only a few marks suggesting the face. Faint ochre foxing spots dot the paper around the animal, and the off-white ground dominates the whole image. There is no shading and no colour beyond ink and paper.

Tigers have long stood in art as emblems of strength and of the wild.
