Shield Design

The shield's design is dominated by a vibrant red field, upon which three imposing seaxes, or short Saxon swords, stand in a vertical arrangement. Their silver blades point upwards, their golden hilts and pommels positioned to the right. This imagery directly connects the university to the historical county of Essex, referencing the region's Anglo-Saxon heritage and its roots with the "East Saxons." At the top of the shield, an open book, rendered in natural colours, signifies the core mission of the university: learning and scholarship. This book is further embellished with seven golden clasps, a nod to the traditional seven liberal arts that have long shaped academic pursuits.

Crest Design

Above the shield, the crest presents a striking visual. A majestic wyvern, a two-legged dragon-like creature, is depicted in silver, standing proudly upon a crossed arrangement of oak branches, rendered in their natural hues and bearing leaves and fruit. The oak branches provide a strong visual connection to the local landscape, symbolizing the oak forests and parkland which are prevalent in and around Colchester, the location of the University. The annulet, a ring that is threaded through the oak branches plus the wyvern, provides a playful and distinctive nod to the university's name, Essex.
