unknown - Design for a Ceiling Painting- Diana Selene Perceives Endymion - 1750–1800 - T-Shirt

A moon goddess descends through the clouds toward a sleeping youth in this ink-and-wash study for a ceiling.

Visual Elements & Composition

Brown-black ink and grey wash sit on a grey-green ground, with pale cream heightening in the clouds. The sheet is vertical and divided by movement. In the upper half, a female figure rides a crescent moon, her drapery streaming behind her in a dark band of wash. A small winged child flies at the upper right, and her outstretched arm carries the eye across the sky. Lower down, a male figure reclines on a grassy bank beside a dog or animal, his body partly turned. Soft clouds drift over the whole sheet and shade the bottom edge.

Meaning & Symbolism

The title names the subject as Diana Selene perceiving Endymion. In classical myth, the moon goddess Selene, also called Diana, looked down from the sky and fell in love with Endymion, the mortal youth Zeus had granted eternal sleep. The crescent moon and the descending figure place her gaze at the centre of the composition, where the divine meets the mortal. Subjects like this suited ceiling schemes because they joined heaven and earth in one image of desire and sleep. The sheet is a compositional study from Europe, made between about 1750 and 1800, when painters worked out illusionistic celestial scenes in wash before enlarging them onto the vault. Its loose, quick handling shows the artist testing the movement and balance of the group.

Carried Across the Chest

A tee carries its design at the chest, so the crescent moon and the sky-borne figure sit at the centre of the wearer's view, the same place the artist placed Selene's gaze. The dark drapery band runs across the shirt as the wearer moves, and the reclining sleeper rests lower on the body, below the sweep of clouds. The shirt makes the ceiling study a daily piece, seen up close and in motion rather than from below.
