Design for a Vase - 1730–1760 - Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee Design

This design is a drawn study for an ornamental vase, made in Europe between 1730 and 1760 during the Rococo period.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is rendered in red crayon on paper and centres entirely on the vessel. Nothing else competes with it. The composition follows the sculptural outline of the vase, with its curving body, its profile, and the ornamental flourishes the designer intended to be carried out in finished material. The linework is the subject, so the eye moves slowly along each contour.

Meaning & Symbolism

Vases of this kind were status objects as much as containers for flowers. Their motifs drew on nature, antiquity and exoticism, which turned a functional vessel into a showpiece for elite interiors. The sheet would have served a workshop draftsman, a working blueprint passed between designer and craftsman for realisation in porcelain, bronze or silver. It records the collaboration between artist and artisan that defined the decorative arts of the period.

Where the Drawing Meets the Tee

A vase is a silhouette built to be read from a few steps back, and a tee presents it at chest height, where the full contour fits across the front. The Rococo flourishes stay legible at that scale, and the crayon line reads as a hand-drawn sketch against the shirt. Wearing it puts a working design from the eighteenth-century studio in the same frame as the everyday.
