unknown - Design for a Wallpaper Frieze - ca. 1810 - T-Shirt

A horizontal frieze built in stacked bands, with a green and black fan of rays rising beneath a stepped arch and a gold laurel spray crossing its face.

Visual Elements & Composition

Black and dark teal green dominate the design, with pale cream, muted gold and warm orange-brown picking out its edges. At the top, vertical gold and cream stripes carry a row of pale rounded motifs edged in brown. Below, a black field frames two concentric arches. The outer arch is worked in grey and white stepped blocks and small diamonds, while the inner arch encloses a half-circle of green rays with gold dots marking their tips. A loose spray of gold leaves climbs the fan from its lower edge, and the numeral 97 appears among the forms.

Meaning & Symbolism

A radiating fan under a semicircular arch was a common device in early nineteenth-century decoration, where it suggested light rising and space being put in order. The laurel refers to honour and to the classical revival then in fashion. The drawing is a finished model for a painter or printer, prepared around 1810 to be reproduced along the upper walls of a room. Its controlled geometry and flat colour reflect the conventions of wall decoration of the period. The original is held in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection.

Arranged for the Chest

A frieze is designed to run across a wall, and a tee's front is a wide, flat field that reads the same way. The bands stack one above another, so the arches sit at the centre of the shirt while the striped top band and the gold leaves carry the eye outward. Seen at arm's length, the green fan becomes the focal point. The layered geometry holds its structure across the width of the shirt, just as it once organised the upper part of a room.
