unknown - Design for a Window Wall - 1790 - T-Shirt

This is a frontal elevation of a neoclassical interior wall, drawn in watercolour and ink around 1790, with two tall windows, a central mirror and a slender console table set into a symmetrical scheme.

Visual Elements & Composition

The wall divides into three bays. Two pale sky blue window openings flank a narrow central panel that holds a mirror-like glass plane. Each bay sits on a deep slate blue ground outlined in muted gold, and strings of small garland beads hang in swags along the edges. Cream white dado panels with moulded rectangular frames anchor the lower wall, and a band of scrolling ornament runs beneath a plain cornice at the top. A square medallion at the centre top carries a shallow urn in relief, and a console table with tapered, fluted legs stands below the mirror.

Meaning & Symbolism

Garlands, urns and classical borders were the standard vocabulary of the later eighteenth century, when rooms were planned as ordered sequences of panels rather than walls covered in hung decoration. The drawing records a scheme in which architecture, furniture and ornament were conceived as one whole. It is a working design sheet, the kind interior designers and architects presented to patrons so they could see a finished room before it was built. The original is held in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection.

Built for the Front of the Shirt

An elevation is a flat, head-on view, and this design reads best when seen straight on, which is how a centred print on a tee is viewed. The symmetry of the bays means the image balances evenly across the chest, with the mirror panel at the centre and the windows holding either side. The cool blue ground and restrained gold keep the composition calm, so the fine line work of the garlands and console legs stays legible as you move through the day.
