Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is built as a long, low band of figures. Warm grey-beige ground fills most of the field, while sepia wash models the drapery in soft, even tones and cream highlights lift the folds. A balance of scales, a staff, and lengths of cloth are the clearest props, and a seated figure on a bank of cloud-like forms anchors the right side. The eye moves left to right, figure by figure, with no single focal point.

Meaning & Symbolism

The figures are personifications, identified by their attributes rather than by narrative action. The balance is a conventional emblem of justice and measure, and the staff and cloth held by the others point toward a sequence of virtues or civic qualities. Designers of the seventeenth century drew on antique reliefs and classical sculpture for decorative schemes in palaces, churches, and civic buildings, and this frieze shows how that repertoire of personified virtues was adapted for painted decoration.
