unknown - Design for rosettes - 1770-1790 - T-Shirt

This grey wash sheet lays out four circular rosettes of carved leaf and petal ornament, each paired with a small curved cornice profile.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built as a grid of four panels, and each panel holds its own rosette modelled in charcoal ink over mid grey wash on pale stone ground. The upper left rosette uses broad lobed leaves and acorn-like buds around a central flower. The upper right has a fuller ring of deeply cut acanthus-type leaves around a small star-shaped centre. The lower left stacks tightly overlapping leaves around a domed boss, and the lower right is a bold daisy-like form with long pointed petals. Light and shadow lift each petal and leaf off the ground, and a numeral sits in the upper left corner of the sheet. The radial pattern of each rosette repeats across the grid, so the eye moves from one centre to the next.

Meaning & Symbolism

Rosettes like these decorated ceilings, friezes and the centres of mouldings in classical interiors. Their leaf and flower motifs follow the repertoire of Greek and Roman ornament, reworked in the late eighteenth century into the lighter, more precise manner of the neoclassical period. Showing several variants on one sheet let a craftsman choose among them for a given room, so the drawing works as a pattern book as much as a picture. It belongs to the tradition of ornament plates made for plasterers, carvers and joiners, who used them as models for interior work. The sheet is dated 1770 to 1790.

Cut to the Shape of a Tee

A rosette is a circle built from repeated petals, so it sits naturally on a chest, where the centre of the print draws the eye at the middle of the body. Each of the four variants reads clearly at a distance, and the grid of panels gives the wearer a set of distinct motifs to compare up close.
