This is a late eighteenth-century watercolour pattern for a man's waistcoat, drawn to be transferred onto cloth and worked in silk.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet sits on a cream ground, and the colour is restrained. A central blue-violet bloom with a yellow-orange centre takes the richest tone and anchors the design. Pansies in violet and yellow flank it, with pink flowers, sage-green leaves and small sprigs of berries tapering toward the sides. Pale grey-blue scrollwork holds the blooms in place, while a narrow dotted band with blue and gold accents runs along the lower and side edges. Above the central band, unfinished pencil tracery of leaves and flowers shows the drawing in progress.

Meaning & Symbolism

Pansies and carnations set among scrolls were widely used on men's embroidered waistcoats of the late 1700s, when such garments were a prominent mark of fashionable dress. The scrolls give the arrangement its structure and suggest the rhythm of stitched work. Patterns like this one passed between tailors, embroiderers and clients in the 1790s, and the thin washes laid over fine pencil guidelines show the working hand of a designer preparing a model for the needle.
