unknown - Design for the Emrboidery of a Man's Waistcoat - 1780–1790 - T-Shirt

This is a late eighteenth-century watercolour pattern for the front of a man's waistcoat, showing violet pansies, blue flowers and white blossoms strung with gold bead garlands.

Visual Elements & Composition

Pale grey dominates the sheet, giving the washes a soft, muted cast. Sage green leaves and stems anchor the flowers, while violet pansies and blue blooms carry the colour. Scalloped festoons of gold beads run across the top of the front, and yellow fringe-like sprays hang from the lower edge of the blossoms. The fullest flower clusters sit at the centre and the sides, so the bead garlands frame the blooms and pull the eye toward the middle. A narrow strip at the left holds a short vertical row of pansies and beads. The outline of the garment is drawn in yellow and brown lines over faint pencil guidelines.

Meaning & Symbolism

Pansies paired with gold or bead accents were a signature of embroidered waistcoats in the later eighteenth century, when the front of a waistcoat was the principal display of fashionable dress. The drawing is a working model: embroiderers would copy the pattern onto silk or satin before stitching. It belongs to a wider group of 1780s fashion and embroidery designs that passed between tailors, embroiderers and clients, and its rhythm of beads, blooms and fringe reflects the taste of that moment.

Wearing the Artwork

A waistcoat front is the part of a garment that faces the viewer, and this design is built for exactly that view. The bead garlands sweep across the chest and the flower clusters land where the eye naturally rests, so the composition reads as a single centred image. On this tee, the pansies and gold festoons sit as one clear focal point, giving the shirt the same light, rhythmic front the original pattern was drawn to show.
