unknown - Door of a Tabernacle Intended To Be Executed In Bronze - 1700-1750 - T-Shirt

This pen and brown ink drawing sets out an elevation for a tabernacle door, with an arched niche at its centre, garlands looped between columns, and a risen figure with a banner crowning the composition.

Visual Elements & Composition

The design is built in a stacked, symmetrical layout. Sepia brown ink carries the linework, with a light slate grey wash and fine hatching on the figures and architecture, all set against warm paper ivory. At the centre, an arched niche framed by two columns holds a small tabernacle with a cross on its roof and a panelled front. Garland swags hang between the columns, and a lamp-like motif with a garland drops below the niche. Two putti recline in clouds on either side of the arch, while two winged figures sit at the base, one leaning toward the centre. A lower oval panel holds a small relief scene framed by foliage.

Meaning & Symbolism

The niche and tabernacle mark the consecrated space where the sacrament is kept, the focal point of the whole design. The garlands and heavenly figures give that space a celebratory character. The standing figure at the summit, with his raised arm, staff, banner and rays of light, points to victory and resurrection, and the winged attendants below guard and honour the sacred centre. The drawing belongs to a body of design sheets for church furnishings and liturgical metalwork made in the first half of the eighteenth century. Its title records that the door was intended to be cast in bronze, a material chosen for permanence in a church setting.

Designed for the Tee

A tabernacle door is a detailed, close-read composition, and on a tee it is seen at chest height as the wearer moves. The central niche sits where the eye lands first, with the garlands and figures spreading outward across the front. The ornate baroque linework reads as a true-to-scale record of an altar piece, now worn as a piece of church design history.
