unknown - Drawing - 16th century - T-Shirt

An architectural elevation in brown ink and wash, crowned by a lunette of cherubs and a cross-topped column that rises from a stepped base as the clear focal point.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is built as a tall, arched frontispiece. Its palette is tan wash across most of the sheet, with paper ivory showing through and dark sepia ink carrying the linework. Fine hatching and light wash suggest depth, so the monument reads as three-dimensional. A horizontal entablature with console-like blocks spans the width, and at the centre a tall column or pedestal, set with a small cross, rises within a recessed arch. Smaller niches with figures and reliefs flank it, and fluted, garlanded pilasters frame the outer edges. A broad flight of steps anchors the base. Scrolling foliage and cartouches fill the upper arch, giving the composition its dense, rich ornament.

Meaning & Symbolism

The drawing presents a sacred or commemorative monument. The central column and cross form its focus, while the cherubs and winged figures in the lunette lift the eye toward a heavenly realm. The flanking niches carry the programme further, and the steps invite the viewer to approach the structure as one would a shrine or tomb. Combinations of architecture, figure and sacred symbol like these expressed faith and remembrance in the design of altars and memorials. The sheet belongs to the body of sixteenth-century architectural drawings made to plan and display the ornament of altars, tombs and church interiors.

Why It Works on a Tee

A tee puts the whole frontispiece in front of you at chest height, so the arch, the cherubs and the central column read together the way the draftsman intended. The steps lead down the body of the shirt, drawing the eye upward to the cross, just as the original composition does.
