unknown - Figure studies for a design of a clavichord cover - late 19th century - T-Shirt

This late nineteenth-century study in black chalk and white heightening shows two standing theatrical figures: a harlequin with a slapstick and a cloaked man, with a mask resting on the ground below them.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is worked on warm tan paper, and that toned ground does much of the work. Grey chalk builds the figures, while white heightening lifts the highlights of the costumes and limbs. A touch of rust red appears as a quiet accent. At the left, the harlequin twists back over one shoulder, his diamond-patterned costume and feathered cap set against the plain field. At the right, the second figure stands with one arm extended and the other hand lifted, his buttoned doublet and deep cloak falling in broad strokes of light and dark. The small mask and a short stick lie at the lower left, anchoring the composition and pointing to the stage.

Meaning & Symbolism

The two figures draw on the stock characters of the commedia dell'arte, the improvised Italian comedy whose masked types were a lasting favourite in European art. The harlequin, with his diamond costume and slapstick, stands for the comic servant, while the cloaked, buttoned figure represents a more courtly type. Placing them side by side was a familiar contrast in the theatre of the period. The mask on the ground confirms the theatrical setting. The drawing was prepared as a figure study for a design of a clavichord cover, one of the preparatory sheets made by decorative artists who studied figures before transferring them to an instrument's surface.

Designed for the Shirt

A tee carries this artwork across the chest, where the harlequin's bright diamond pattern and the lively, open stance read clearly at a glance. The design keeps the drawing's lightness and movement, so the figures seem to turn as you move.
