unknown - Grey and Coral Bird on Bouquet with Rose, Tulip, Daisies, and Forget-Me-Nots, - ca. 1800–1830 - T-Shirt

A grey and coral songbird holds a small pink grub on a thorny stem, surrounded by a rose, a striped tulip and clusters of blue flowers.

Visual Elements & Composition

The bird sits near the centre of the sheet, its pale grey head and coral-tinted breast and wings setting the palette. A full deep pink rose fills the upper right, balanced by a red and white striped tulip at lower right. Clusters of blue star-shaped flowers gather in the middle, with small white blossoms and yellow centres tucked beside the rose. Green leaves of several shapes fill the gaps, and a dark, scalloped-edged butterfly in blue and pink hovers at upper left. The thorny stem, bound with a lilac ribbon, runs through the arrangement on a diagonal, giving the whole bouquet a sense of movement.

Meaning & Symbolism

The artwork joins a songbird, an insect and garden flowers, a grouping typical of decorative natural history painting. The bird feeding on a small creature hints at the cycle of the garden, in which the flowers draw in the insects that sustain the birds. The rose and the striped tulip were the prized blooms of the period, and their broken colouring was highly valued by collectors. The sheet is a watercolour on paper, dated in its catalogue record to about 1800 to 1830, with fine hatched shading on the feathers and petals and flat colour on the leaves. It belongs to the tradition of flower and bird studies that produced pattern sheets and cabinet pictures for collectors.

Where the Bird Meets the Body

A tee carries this bouquet across the chest, where it is seen at close range in conversation and in passing. The bird and butterfly sit above the rose and tulip, so the eye moves from the living activity of the wings down to the blossoms as the fabric moves with the wearer. The fine hatching and delicate colour read best at this scale, and the design keeps its lively, layered character from every angle.
