unknown - Half-length portrait of a man - 1820–1830 - T-Shirt

A graphite study of a balding man in a buttoned coat, shown half-length in three-quarter view with his arms folded across his chest and his gaze directed off the sheet.

Visual Elements & Composition

The figure fills the centre of a vertical sheet, and the surrounding paper is left plain, so the eye settles on the head and the folded pose. The palette is restrained: cream paper, graphite grey for the darker accents in the hair and coat, and lighter grey shading worked softly over the face and jacket. The face is modelled with light tone around the eyes, nose and cheeks, while the lower section of the coat is only lightly sketched. A high collar and a row of buttons down the front define the costume.

Meaning & Symbolism

The folded arms and steady sideways glance give the sitter a self-possessed, attentive quality. The plain costume and absence of props suggest an ordinary working man rather than a figure of rank. Half-length studies like this one were made to record a likeness and a character quickly and directly, a practice common among artists in training and practising draughtsmen in the 1820s. The drawing is dated to 1820–1830 and comes from the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection.

Drawn From Life, Worn Close

A portrait built on a single figure and a quiet sheet of paper suits a tee, where the image sits on the chest and the wearer becomes the frame. The sitter's folded arms and direct, sideways look carry across the front of the shirt as a calm, observant presence. Each graphite line and soft shadow reads at close range, so the study is best seen the way it was made: up close, in conversation with the person looking at it.
