unknown - Insects - 18th century - T-Shirt

A scatter of butterflies, a dragonfly and two beetles, each painted separately in bright colour on a pale sheet.

Visual Elements & Composition

Cream forms the ground across most of the design, so every insect reads cleanly against it. Burnt orange, chocolate brown, mint green and cobalt blue supply the accents. A brown butterfly sits at upper right and an orange and black butterfly with spotted white borders at upper left. A green-bodied dragonfly spreads its pale wings at centre. A pink and red moth sits at left, a cream and red moth at right, and a yellow spotted butterfly at lower left. A red and a blue beetle lie near the bottom edge. Each figure is outlined in fine dark line and filled with flat, even colour, with minimal shadow. The layout is a loose scatter rather than a grid, and the inscription "Presented by Miss Virginia Gerson" appears on the sheet.

Meaning & Symbolism

The arrangement follows the conventions of the entomological study: each specimen is separated, with wings spread and legs extended, so its structure and markings can be read at a glance. Sheets like this recorded the variety of forms and colours in the natural world. Their bright colour made them informative and attractive at once, and collectors kept them as albums and cabinet pieces. This is an eighteenth-century painting on paper, and no artist is attributed. Its subject is close observation of the insect itself.

Designed for the Tee

A sheet of isolated specimens suits a shirt because the chest is a flat field, and each insect sits where the eye lands. The scatter reads from across a room and rewards a closer look up close. Wearing it means carrying a small natural history cabinet across your chest, every creature still separate and clear against the pale ground.
