unknown - Remembrance Greeting - 1838–1840 - T-Shirt

This design is a hand-coloured lithograph collage from the late 1830s that turns a single greeting into a quiet scene of remembrance.

Visual Elements & Composition

Overlapping rectangular cards form the collage, with a central rectangle anchoring the layout. Pale grey covers roughly a third of the surface, while crimson, dark green, cream and dark slate appear in smaller, deliberate patches. The figures are arranged across the cards: a woman reading a book with handwritten verses, tulips in a vase, a woman lifting a jewelled casket, a spaniel on a cushion, a parrot on a perch, a butterfly, a cherub, and a spaniel with a child. The words "Remembrance" and "One more leaf" sit among the cards and give the scene its voice.

Meaning & Symbolism

Each motif carries a sentiment of the period. Tulips and butterflies suggest transience, the casket holds keepsakes, and the handwritten verses and the greeting itself stand for correspondence as a way of keeping someone present. The pet dogs and the child recall the domestic intimacy that Victorian households prized. Together the images express grief and devotion as something shared and shaped into a form, which was how the era held onto private feeling. The work belongs to the Romantic interest in interiority and nostalgia that defined the late 1830s.

Wearing the Remembrance Greeting

A tee carries this collage across the chest, where the cards read as they move with the wearer. Up close, the verses, the casket and the small butterfly come into focus, rewarding a second look the way a keepsake does. The composition sits on a single surface, so the memorial scene stays whole and legible from across the room.
