unknown - Section of a Vestibule - ca. 1790 - T-Shirt

This is a grey-wash elevation of a neoclassical vestibule wall, with a deep cornice, a scrolling frieze, two panelled doors and a statue standing in an arched niche.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built on strict symmetry. A carved profile medallion sits at the centre of the frieze, where interlocking scrolls and foliage run the full width beneath the cornice. Panelled doors flank the centre on both sides, and the arched niche at the middle holds a pale, draped figure on a plinth. A slender fluted pilaster stands in shadow at the far left. Soft grey wash, in tones of stone and charcoal, models the planes of the wall, so the eye moves from the bright figure outward to the darker edges.

Meaning & Symbolism

The statue gives the room its focus, a device common in neoclassical interiors where sculpture reinforced the civic or moral purpose of a space. The profile medallion repeats that classical reference on a smaller scale, and the matching doors keep attention fixed on the central figure. The sheet dates to around 1790 and belongs to the years when architects and their draughtsmen produced detailed wall elevations for interiors and garden buildings. The original drawing is held in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection.

Cut for the Chest

On a tee, the design reads as one composition across the front of the body. The niche and figure settle at the centre of the chest, with the frieze running across the shoulders and the doors bracketing the sides, so the wall's symmetry matches the symmetry of the shirt. Viewed from a few feet away, the whole elevation reads at once, the way it would across a finished room.
