unknown - Sketch of a Capital and Cornice Profile - 1850–1875 - T-Shirt

This is a pencil architectural study of a classical capital, a stepped base and a scalloped cornice, drawn in measured profile on aged cream paper.

Visual Elements & Composition

Yellowed paper fills nearly the whole sheet, with pencil grey lines carrying the drawing. At the centre sits a capital with a curled volute and a crown of acanthus leaves, resting on a short banded neck and a stepped base of rounded and square members. A cornice band runs across the upper sheet, its lower edge marked by a repeated scallop. At the left, a section through a wall or pier shows a moulded projection and a curved arch line. Faint construction lines divide the sheet into vertical and horizontal fields, and a few pencilled annotations and a number appear at upper right.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sheet records the parts of the classical orders so they could be measured, copied and built. Its capital draws on the Corinthian order, with volutes and foliage, while the moulded bands set the horizontal rhythm of a building. Drawings like this were working documents in architects' offices and builders' workshops, where the profile carried a design into stone, plaster or wood. Measured architectural detail formed a core part of training and practice in mid-nineteenth-century Europe, when antique and Renaissance ornament shaped how architects learned their craft. This study comes from that body of documentation, prized for its precision and clarity.

Reading the Profile on the Tee

A capital like this is meant to be read from close range, one contour after another, so the front of the shirt becomes the measured sheet. Worn on the body, the volute and cornice scallop move with the wearer, turning a flat working drawing into something seen up close in everyday wear. Its quiet pencil linework suits a plain, classic silhouette and reads clearly in a single view.
