unknown - Study for a Painting- The Decapitation of Saint Catherine - 1803 - T-Shirt

A grey wash and pen study of Saint Catherine kneeling in prayer beside a broken wheel, with an executioner raising a blade above her, dated 1803.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is built from pale paper tones, soft grey wash and dark grey ink. Saint Catherine kneels on a stone block in the foreground, hands clasped at her breast and face lifted upward beneath a halo. Fragments of the broken wheel lie beside her, and a curved sword rises at the upper right. A winged figure drifts through clouds on the upper left, holding a palm frond, while a dim landscape of trees and a distant building fills the right side. Light and dark washes model the drapery and clouds, and a thin ruled border frames the whole scene.

Meaning & Symbolism

The drawing depicts the execution of Catherine of Alexandria as told in her legend. She was condemned to be broken on a spiked wheel, which fell apart at her touch, and was then beheaded. The broken wheel marks her miraculous escape from the first torment, while her upward gaze and clasped hands express the steadfastness of the martyr. The winged figures reflect the tradition that angels carried her body to Mount Sinai. The subject was widely painted in European art as a model of learned faith and courage. Titled as a study for a painting, the sheet is a preparatory drawing for a larger dramatic composition, made in the academic practice of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Printed on the Tee

The composition is a vertical sheet, so the image sits centred across the chest where the kneeling saint and the sword can be read at a glance. The grey wash translates into a quiet, tonal print that keeps the drawing's fluid shadows and the calm figure at its centre.
