unknown - Study of a Bunch of Roses - 1750-1775 - T-Shirt

This is a watercolour and gouache study of a loose bouquet of layered blooms in pink, yellow and white, painted on blue-grey paper and dated 1750 to 1775.

Visual Elements & Composition

The flowers rise from a cluster of stems at the lower centre and fan upward into a loose vertical arrangement. A large white flower with purple-edged petals and a dark centre sits in the middle and anchors the group. A magenta bloom sits at the top left, a yellow head at the upper centre, and a pink bloom at the right, with a pale grey-white bud at the left. Serrated sage-green leaves and stems fill the gaps between the heads, and a brownish leaf sits low on the left. The blue-grey ground dominates the sheet, and the flowers are built up in layers of tone against it.

Meaning & Symbolism

Flower studies of this kind recorded cultivated blooms at the height of their form, arranged so that each head could be read clearly against the others. The catalogue title refers to roses, but the forms shown are closer to ranunculus and anemone, with their many layered petals and bright contrasting colours. Bouquets like this were admired for their variety and stately rhythm, and they served both as naturalistic records and as models for decorative work. The sheet belongs to the botanical and flower painting that flourished in Europe in the mid-eighteenth century, when artists often worked on tinted paper and defined petals in a few confident strokes.

Designed for the Wearer

Seen on a tee, the bouquet sits at the centre of the chest, so the large white anemone becomes the focal point, with the magenta and yellow blooms opening up around it. The arrangement reads from a distance the way the original sheet asks to be viewed, with each flower distinct and the blue-grey ground giving the colours room to stand out.
