unknown - Unfinished Design for a Waistcoat - 1780-1790 - T-Shirt

This is a pencil and watercolour design for the front panel of a waistcoat, with sprigs of blue bell flowers hanging from green stems along a curved edge.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is pale grey paper with a shaped panel outline running diagonally across it. Only part of the pattern is painted. Along a yellow-edged curve, bluebell violet flowers hang from leaf green stems, with autumn brown and green leaves and tiny stamen yellow accents set among them. A smaller spray of blue blooms sits at the far left edge. The lower and right-hand areas stay in fine pencil alone, and the faint scroll and foliage guides in the upper part show where the rest of the design would go.

Meaning & Symbolism

Hanging bell flowers and loose sprays were a common choice for embroidered and painted textiles of the late eighteenth century, when floral ornament was applied to garments as well as furnishings. Placing the sprigs along the curved edge shows how the pattern would follow the line of the cloth. The sheet is a working drawing from about 1780 to 1790, when waistcoats were often richly decorated and designers supplied patterns to tailors, embroiderers and silk weavers. It records the stage where the layout was fixed before the full design was painted.

Bringing the Drawing onto a Tee

The flowers follow a curve here, and that curve suits a tee's chest and shoulders, where a printed sprig reads as it would on a garment. Wearing it, the bluebell sprigs rise along the line of the body the way the original pattern was meant to sit against a waistcoat front, so the sketch's pencil-and-paint structure stays visible on the shirt.
