Wapen Amsterdam (Netherlands) Hoodie - Design Description
This hoodie showcases the iconic coat of arms of Amsterdam, a heraldic emblem rich with history and symbolism. The primary design element is the shield, the heart of Amsterdam's identity.
The Shield
The shield itself is a bold statement in red (Gules), setting the stage for the striking central feature: a black vertical stripe (Pale Sable) that runs down the middle. This black stripe is believed to symbolize the Amstel River, the very lifeblood of the city.
The Saint Andrew's Crosses
Dominating the black stripe are three silver (Argent) Saint Andrew's Crosses (saltorels) arranged vertically. These prominent crosses are not only visually arresting but also hold significant meaning. They pay homage to the city's historical connection to the noble Persijn family and serve as a symbol of Saint Andrew, the patron saint after whom the city is named.
Imperial Crown and Supporters
Crowning the shield is the Imperial Crown of Austria, a symbol of Amsterdam's historical ties to the Holy Roman Empire and a testament to the city's valor and loyalty. Two golden lions rampant (standing upright) flank the shield, these were added in the 16th century, representing strength and pride, stand on a stone pedestal.
Motto
The motto "Heldhaftig, Vastberaden, Barmhartig" ("Valiant, Steadfast, Compassionate"), is a post-war addition to honor the city's resilience. The complete coat of arms is a powerful representation of Amsterdam's history, values, and enduring spirit.
