West Betuwe Wapen (Netherlands) Hoodie - Design Description

This hoodie showcases the official coat of arms, or "wapen," of West Betuwe, Netherlands, a symbol rich in historical and regional significance.

Shield Design

The central element is the shield, quartered into four distinct sections, each representing the merging of the former municipalities of Geldermalsen, Neerijnen, and Lingewaal.

  • Top-Left: A field of red is adorned with golden "bezants" – circular gold discs – borrowed directly from the coat of arms of Geldermalsen, symbolizing wealth and referencing the area's heritage.
  • Top-Right: A gold field features a striking black gate or castle entrance. This design element represents the historical city rights of Asperen and Heukelum, while also evoking the numerous castles that once characterized the region.
  • Bottom-Left: Against a white background, red castellated (embattled) lines, with their distinct battlements, are displayed. This section is a direct reference to the Van Arkel family and the former arms of Lingewaal.
  • Bottom-Right: Showcases a unique pattern of vertical blue stripes with a white "vair" pattern. This pattern, also known as "pales vair," comes from the arms of Neerijnen and echoes the heraldry of noble families like Van Arkel and Châtillon, who historically held land in the area.

Supporters

Flanking the shield on either side are two golden lions, which serve as "shield-holders." These lions are a direct nod to the historical city rights held by parts of the municipality, such as Asperen and Heukelum, and were a common symbol in their original coats of arms.

Overall Meaning and Representation

The design as a whole brings together the historical elements of the three former municipalities. The coat of arms reflects local history with its castles, noble family heraldry, and symbols of wealth, city rights and heritage.
