WikiProject Myanmar Peacock (Myanmar) (Coat of Arms) Hoodie - Design
This hoodie showcases a powerful emblem of Burmese identity: the green peacock, a symbol deeply rooted in Myanmar's history and culture. The design prominently features a stylized representation of the peacock, the very emblem used by the WikiProject Myanmar to represent topics related to the country.
The Peacock's Significance
The central element of the design, the Burmese green peacock (known as ka-daung), is far more than just a decorative element. Historically, the peacock served as a royal emblem of the Konbaung dynasty, Myanmar's last monarchy, appearing on royal attire and the prestigious Peacock Throne. Its presence signifies a connection to a rich past of regal authority and cultural pride.
During the British colonial era, the peacock continued to represent a spirit of national identity, appearing on the flag of the governor and the naval ensign. Anti-colonial activists even utilized the peacock on a white flag as a symbol of resistance against British rule. After Myanmar's independence in 1948, the peacock was featured on banknotes, solidifying its position as a symbol of the newly independent nation.
Symbol of the People
Notably, a variant known as the "fighting peacock" (khut-daung) was adopted by student unions and the National League for Democracy (NLD). This emblem honored the students who led the pro-democracy movements, representing courage, resilience, and the fight for freedom.
This design celebrates a symbol that represents both the rich history of royalty and the spirit of independence that persists to this day.
