William Trost Richards, American, - Landscape, Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland - August 10, 1867 - T-Shirt

This 1867 drawing by William Trost Richards gives a close, carefully observed view of the Lauterbrunnen valley in Switzerland, with its steep cliffs and open sweep of alpine ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

The composition is built on graphite line work across the paper. Rock faces and mountain masses take up most of the frame, rendered with dense hatching that shows the weight and angle of each slope. Open passages of valley floor and sky give the eye room to travel from the foreground up toward the peaks. The drawing is monochrome, so its tonal range of light and shadow carries the whole image.

Meaning & Symbolism

Richards was a central figure in both the Hudson River School and the American Pre-Raphaelite movement, and this sheet reflects the second: a patient commitment to recording the natural world exactly as it appears. Lauterbrunnen was a celebrated stop for nineteenth-century travellers, and the drawing belongs to a period when the Alps stood for the sublime, a place where human scale seemed small beside monumental geography. The date, August 10, 1867, anchors the work to a specific day of observation.

Wearing the Valley

A tee is worn close to the body and seen from every side as the wearer moves, so the valley wraps around the chest and shoulders rather than hanging on a wall. The graphite line work reads as drawn texture, and the cliffs and waterfalls sit where the wearer can view them up close and in changing light. Each piece carries the same record of a single August day in 1867.
