William Trost Richards, American, - Quick Landscape with Trees and Mountains - 1870–85 - T-Shirt

This is a fast, open-air landscape study of trees rising against mountainous ground, drawn in the late nineteenth century by American artist William Trost Richards.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built from loose, quickly placed marks rather than finished contours. Trees cluster in the foreground and middle ground, their masses shaped by confident strokes, while the mountains recede behind them in softer, more summary forms. The sheet is rendered in graphite on cream paper, so the tonal range comes from pencil pressure and open areas of paper. Nothing is polished or fully resolved, and the unfinished edges keep the eye moving across the scene.

Meaning & Symbolism

Studies like this were working tools. Richards used rapid sketches to record light, atmosphere and the underlying shape of terrain before turning those impressions into larger studio paintings. Known for his precise landscapes and marine views, and associated with both the Hudson River School and the American Pre-Raphaelite movement, he is remembered for detail in finished work. This sheet shows the other side of his practice: direct observation of nature, recorded on the spot.

Wearing a Study of Wild Terrain

A drawing made to capture a passing scene suits a shirt, which is worn through the day and moves with the body. The trees and ridgelines sit across the chest as a single, quiet image, with the looseness of the pencil lines carrying over into the print. Wearing it puts a record of an afternoon outdoors, sketched fast and kept simple, in everyday view.
