William Trost Richards, American, - Sketch of Choppy Ocean - 1870–85 - T-Shirt

This is a fast, close study of breaking Atlantic waves, drawn by William Trost Richards in graphite on cream paper between 1870 and 1885.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is given over almost entirely to water. Short, overlapping strokes build up the crests and troughs, and the pencil line thickens where the swell folds over itself and thins where the surface flattens. There is no horizon, no sky and no shoreline to anchor the view, so the eye moves across the page the way it would move across the sea. Light and shadow come from tonal shading alone, with the cream paper showing through in the brightest foam. The composition is a single, unbroken field of motion.

Meaning & Symbolism

Richards made this during the decades when he was working along the Atlantic coast, observing wind and water directly. The sketch records a passing state of the sea rather than a finished scene, and its focus on movement reflects the late nineteenth-century interest in nature's physical forces. Richards, shaped first by the Hudson River School and later devoted to coastal subjects, treated a rough sea as a problem of accurate observation. The drawing carries that scientific attention alongside a sense of awe at the power of the water.

Where This Study Meets the Shirt

Waves are a subject that repeat across a garment, and this design suits a shirt because its energy is spread evenly over the whole field rather than gathered at one point. Worn, the pattern of churning water moves with the body and changes shape from every angle, much as the sea itself does. The design needs no framing or centre point to hold together, so it reads as a continuous surface wherever the eye lands on the chest or sleeve.
