William Trost Richards, American - Tree Trunks, Darmstadt - June 27, 1867 v2 - Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee Design

A close, unhurried study of tree trunks in Darmstadt, drawn by William Trost Richards on June 27, 1867.

Visual Elements & Composition

The trunks fill the frame. Rather than opening onto a sweeping view, the drawing sits close to the bark, so its ridges, fissures and knots carry the image. The marks are fine graphite lines on paper, following the form of each trunk. Little is left outside the wood, so the eye stays on the surface of the bark.

Meaning & Symbolism

Richards was a prominent American artist known for meticulous landscape work, associated with both the Hudson River School and the American Pre-Raphaelite movement. This study was made during his travels in Europe, and it reflects a nineteenth-century habit of looking hard at nature as a route to understanding. The trunks are ordinary forest subjects, yet the drawing treats them as worthy of sustained attention, a record of the earth's forms made with careful fidelity.

Wearing the Study

Bark is a surface best read up close, and a tee brings it there. As the wearer moves, the lines of the trunks shift across the chest and follow the body, so the study is seen in motion rather than held still on a wall. Rough, detailed draftsmanship sits on a plain garment, and the texture of the drawing becomes the focus of the front.
