William Trost Richards, American, - Unfinished Cliff Study - 1870–85 - T-Shirt

This pencil study by William Trost Richards shows a rocky cliff built from loose, directional hatching, drawn on a cream sketchbook page inside a ruled border.

Visual Elements & Composition

The rock mass rises at the right of the frame, and its outline breaks into jagged edges along the left side and across the crest. Graphite hatching follows the stone, with the darkest strokes gathering at the base and in a vertical recess. The upper centre is left as bare paper where the rock catches the light, so the drawing's strongest contrast sits between that sunlit crest and the shadowed fissure. Much of the framed field stays blank, and the drawing stops without a finished ground or horizon.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sketch is a study of geological form rather than a story. Richards returned again and again to the rugged coastline and stratified rock of the Atlantic shore, where stone posed problems of light, mass and texture. The hatching traces the direction of the strata and records how planes of rock gain and lose light. Studies like this were working material, and the artist later recombined such observed forms into finished studio landscapes. Richards (1833–1905) was an American painter associated with the Pre-Raphaelite-influenced branch of landscape practice.

Wearing the Cliff Study

A cliff study is built from restraint: open paper, a few dense shadows, and a rock that is never fully finished. On a tee, the drawing sits in the open field of the chest, where its blank surround matches the plain fabric around it. Worn, the design reads as a fragment of a working sketchbook, not a finished scene, which suits its unfinished character.
