William Trost Richards, American, - Waves Breaking on Rocks and Tall Cliffs - 1890–1900 - T-Shirt

This is a pen and black ink study of surf striking a rugged coastline, drawn by William Trost Richards in the 1890s.

Visual Elements & Composition

Black ink carries the whole image. Swells build and break against dark, jagged rock, and the cliffs rise tall at the edges of the scene. Richards works in fine, controlled lines to render the churn of white water and the hard planes of stone, so the sea reads as motion and the cliffs read as mass. The off-white paper surrounds the drawing and gives the marks their contrast.

Meaning & Symbolism

The meeting of wave and rock is the subject. Richards turned to these coastal scenes in his later years, moving from inland landscapes to the edge where land and sea collide. Drawn during a period when Victorian audiences were captivated by the sublime power of nature, the work sets the restless water against the apparent permanence of the earth. Richards was a leading figure in American art, and his commitment to geological accuracy, shaped by the Pre-Raphaelites, is visible in every ridge of stone.

Wearing the Surf

A tee is seen up close and at a glance, so the drawing reads best as a single, carefully placed image. Its dense ink lines work at the scale of a chest print, where the viewer can follow the path of each swell from the open water to the rock. Wearing it puts the study of tide and stone on the body, a reminder of the constant flux of the sea against the shore.
