Meaning & Symbolism

Schooners were the working vessels of the Atlantic seaboard, carrying cargo and fishing its waters, so this scene holds both the rhythm of maritime labour and the stillness of a windless day. Homer built his reputation through illustration before turning to oil and watercolour, and in the 1880s he spent increasing time on the New England coast. Drawings like this one record the observation behind his finished marine paintings, where he studied vessels, weather and water closely.
