Winslow Homer, American, 1836–1910 - Schooner with Three Dories - 1880 v1 - T-Shirt

A pencil and white chalk study on tan paper, this drawing shows a two-masted schooner under sail with three dories alongside its hull in choppy water.

Visual Elements & Composition

The vessel is drawn in fine graphite lines, its sails shaded in soft grey and touched with white highlights that stand out against the darker hull. Crests of foam break around the small boats, and a few quick strokes mark the horizon and the wave patterns. Above, loose diagonal bands of white chalk drift across a pale tan sky, so the warm paper tone runs through the whole sheet. The schooner and its dories dominate the centre, with the sky left open and airy.

Meaning & Symbolism

Dories were the working boats of the offshore fishing fleet, carried on deck or towed by schooners and used to set and haul lines far from shore. Their place beside a vessel under sail speaks to the working life of the sea, where men and boats moved between ship and water in rough conditions. Winslow Homer, the American painter and illustrator, returned again and again to coastal life and the relationship between people and the sea. This sheet, dated 1880 and inscribed by the artist in the lower right, reflects the direct, observational handling of form and weather found in his preparatory drawings of that period.

Where the Drawing Meets the Shirt

A drawing built on wind and motion suits a shirt that moves with the body. The schooner and dories wrap across the chest, so the wave-cut spray and the bright chalk sky read as the wearer moves. The restrained linework keeps the sea scene quiet and considered, letting the composition carry the weather.
