Winslow Homer, American, 1836–1910 - Two Schooners - 1880 v3 - T-Shirt

Winslow Homer's Two Schooners shows a pair of sailing vessels working open water, rendered as a study of the sea and the craft that moved across it.

Visual Elements & Composition

The two schooners sit in open water, their hulls and rigging set against the surface of the sea. Nothing crowds the frame. The vessels are the focus, with the water and sky left open around them, so the eye moves between the two ships and the distance between them. The work is drawn in graphite and finished with brush and white gouache on neutral yellow paper, a restrained palette where the pale highlights on the sails and water carry the image.

Meaning & Symbolism

Schooners like these were the working ships of the eastern seaboard in the late nineteenth century, carrying cargo and fish and tying coastal towns to one another. Homer, one of the leading American painters of his time, returned again and again to the sea and the people who worked on it. Here the ships stand for the endurance of coastal industry and the uneasy relationship between human labour and the Atlantic, where the horizon promised prosperity and carried constant risk. Made in 1880, during the Gilded Age, the study records the maritime life that shaped the American coast.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A tee is worn close to the body and seen from every side as the wearer moves, so the two schooners travel with you rather than sitting at a distance on a wall. The composition is spare and linear, and it reads cleanly across the chest, where the two vessels can hold the centre of the shirt the way they hold the centre of the sheet.
