Alfred H. Maurer, born New York City - Seated Nude - ca. 1927-1928 - T-Shirt

A seated woman is drawn largely from behind, her head turned toward the left, resting against a dark, patterned cushion in a quiet study of the human form.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is cream paper, and the pale figure occupies most of the vertical frame. A fine, continuous contour defines the back, hip and folded legs, with softer tonal accents along the spine and calf. On the right, a dark cushion or chair back is filled with short hatched strokes, creating the strongest contrast in the design. A faint shadow sits beneath the figure, and the signature, A. H. Maurer, appears in the lower right.

Meaning & Symbolism

The seated nude is a long-standing subject in which the body rests at ease, and here the arm folded across the body and the turn of the head suggest a moment of quiet withdrawal rather than display. The curve of the spine becomes a study of volume and rhythm. Alfred H. Maurer (1868-1932) was an American painter born in New York City who spent long periods in Paris, absorbing the bright colour of the Fauves and later the structural approach of Cubism. These figure studies, dated ca. 1927-1928, show his continued attention to the body and expressive line late in his career.

Made for the Body That Wears It

Printed on a tee, the figure wraps across the chest and shoulders, so the pale body and dark cushion sit where the eye naturally rests. The seated pose reads as calm and unhurried, a fitting companion to a shirt worn for everyday moments. The line work carries the same quiet intimacy as the original sheet, reproduced as an independent print of Maurer's drawing.
